In the late 1800s, during the Victorian architectural period, Ferndale blossomed as the agricultural center of Humboldt County and all of Northern California. A prosperous dairy industry provided the economic base for Ferndale, and the blend of agriculture and architecture resulted in the town's splendidly ornate buildings, which came to be known as “Butterfat Palaces”. During this period, Humboldt County was sparsely populated, allowing abundant opportunities for hard-working immigrants. Ferndale became a melting-pot of Scandinavian, Swiss-Italian and Portuguese cultures. The Portuguese Holy Ghost Celebration and the Scandinavian Mid-Summer Festival are annual events to this day. The Victorian Village of Ferndale has been able to avoid urban sprawl and pseudo 'old town' renovation to remain a thriving community, virtually unchanged since the 1800s!

Ferndale, California - Movie Settings and Fairs

Because of its in tact Victorian Architecture, Ferndale has become a  popular film location and is featured in movies like The Majestic with Jim Carrey, Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman and Salem’s Lot starring David Soul and James Mason. The Humboldt County Fair is held in Ferndale every August at the county fairgrounds on the edge of town and features the only horse-racing events in the county along with the standard fare of agricultural, pastoral and artistic contests, carnival games and commercial or non-profit booths.
