History of Weichpec, California
Before white settlement the Klamath was home to several groups of Indians, including a tribe of Modocs known as the Klamath. The life of these Indians, who depended primarily on the river's plentiful salmon and steelhead for subsistence, was profoundly disrupted after 1850 when gold-seeking whites overran their remote homelands. Dam building, dredging, and other mining operations dumped tons of rock and dirt into the river and cut the fish off from some of their best spawning grounds and the native Indian population dropped sharply.
