The Town of Weott California
The small town of Weott is an unincorporated village located within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park south of Eureka on State Highway 101. Weott is located along the Avenue of the Giants. The town is approximately 45 miles south of Eureka and 20 miles north of Garberville. It has a population of 450. Back in 1961, the Eel River flooded and destroyed most of the downtown taking with it about 80 buildings, all that remains now is the old sidewalks. The rest of the town was rebuilt up the hill, and currently has two churches and a few other buildings.

History of Weott, California

For thousands of years the Sinkyone Indians lived in this area leaving relatively little impact on the redwood forest. They used the trees for everything from baskets from the root fibers to logs for canoes. As elsewhere in California, the gold rush changed their way of life forever. In 1917, the organizers of the Save-the-Redwoods League visited the area and saw that the magnificent redwood forests of the area would be lost within a few years unless something was done to save them. Their concern and foresight led to the creation of the League in 1918. Today, Humboldt Redwoods State Park, in which Weott is located, includes more than 52,000 acres offering groves of old growth coast Redwoods. The park offers more than 100 miles of hiking trails as well as abundant outdoor activities.
